EMBRYO TRANSFER
Embryo transfer is the breeding method of choice for many situations. For example, when a mare is actively being used as a performance horse or is older and unable to carry a foal to term. Embryo transfer also allows a mare to produce more than one foal in the same year.
After the "donor" mare is bred, she is monitored daily for ovulation. Seven days after ovulation occurs, the donor mare’s uterus is flushed (to extract the embryo) and the embryo is than transferred into the uterus of the waiting "recipient" mare. The recipient mare will than carry the foal to term naturally. The recipient mare will give birth to and raise the foal as her own.
