Robert Huckfeldt

Since 1957, "Dr. Bob", as he is affectionately known, has graced us with his presence here at Redmond Veterinary Clinic. He grew up in Nebraska and Wyoming but spent most of his childhood in Washington. As a teenager he worked in the hayfields of Goldendale, Washington.

In the many years that Bob has been a Veterinarian, he has been witness to many changes. He marvels at the vast improvement of medicines and equipment that are available to the veterinary field. Even simple things have made a big difference. For example, improvements in the communication technology have greatly freed up the doctor’s time. Because of such things as pagers, cell phones and answering services, Veterinarians can now stay in contact with their clinic and clients anytime or anywhere.

Dr. Bob is proud of how RVC has been proactive in keeping up with the changing technology and equipment. These upgrades have not always been a small financial investment, but have always made a big difference in how we practiced medicine. He does admit that as central Oregon's population has grown, the area is less agrarian and farm oriented. He misses the close relationships that vets had with families back in the early times at RVC.

Bob admits he has changed over the years also. He believes that he has become more cognizant of the importance of pain management and the humane treatment of all species of animals.

At his small farm outside of Redmond, Bob owns all species of animals himself. He has fifty head of beef cattle, two or three of which are old favorite pets more than anything. He also owns six horses ranging from four years to twenty-five years of age. His newest addition is a bird hunting dog-named Sadie.

Bob is former President of the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association and is still a current member. He also maintains memberships in the American Veterinary Medical Association, and The Society For Theriogenology. As a member of OVERT (Oregon Veterinary Emergency Response Team), Bob has worked with both the state and federal government on disease control and prevention.

Since Bob is semi-retired, he does get time to spend on his favorite leisure activities. He enjoys fishing, hunting, horseback riding and traveling with his wife, Carol, in their 5th wheel trailer. They also like to spend family time with their children and grandchildren.

Bob says that the best advise he could give to a young Veterinarian just starting out is this: Don't let the business and financial aspects of the veterinary practice become so dominant that you fail to enjoy the wonderful profession that we are privileged to be a part of.
