Glucosamine Information
Glucosamine is a so-called nutraceutical that be used as an adjunctive treatment for osteoarthritis or other painful conditions in horses, cats, dogs, etc. It is well tolerated.

Glucosamine is not a regulated drug, choose products carefully; much variation in commercially available products.

Redmond Veterinary Clinic recommends SynoviG3 containing the following:

Glucosamine HCl, a naturally occurring amino sugar found in all tissues of the body and part of the "glue" which holds tissue cells together. Combined with Perna Canaliculus, Glucosamine returns viscosity to the synovial fluid and enhances its ability to carry the essential nutrients necessary to rebuild cartilage, insulate the bone from friction and cushion the joint in movement.

MethylSulfonylMethane (MSM), to alleviate discomfort associated with systemic inflammatory disorders. Supplementation with MSM can result in the relief of pain and stiffness along with reduced swelling and inflammation. MSM prevents pressure buildup in cells, allowing nutrients in and toxins out.

Creatine Monohydrate, which enhances the energy required to fuel muscle contraction, strengthening the muscles that support and protect the joint.

Antioxidants such as Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid and Grape Seed Extract to combat the harm caused by free radicals, unstable oxygen molecules that damage the cellular structure and connective tissues.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids – Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) – which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties. Through the process of competitive inhibition, EPA hinders the production of pro-inflammatory mediators yielded from the breakdown of Arachidonic Acid, inhibiting the inflammatory process.

Canine Dosing for Glucosamine*

*Dosages are estimated.  Contact your veterinarian for specific amounts.  Dose should be doubled for the first 6 weeks.

Onset of any clinical improvement may require 2-6 weeks of treatment. Do not switch brands from that prescribed without first contacting your veterinarian. Side effects are unlikely, but mild gastrointestinal upset has been reported in small animals. Should this be troublesome, contact your veterinarian.

Note: Because of the variability in products available, it is recommended to choose a product that has been tested in the species for which it is marketed; consult the product label.
