Foal Pneumonia
Examination by your veterinarian is essential in helping to determine the severity of the disease and the
treatment options available.

General Information
The condition can be caused by a number of factors including bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Pneumonia in foals causes significant economic losses as well as increased labor demands on the farm manager. The clinical signs depend on the length and severity of the condition but can include intermittent coughing and mild mucoid nasal discharge to foals with high fevers, severe breathing problems, and a profusely runny nose. Examination by your veterinarian is essential in helping to determine the severity of the disease and the treatment options available.

Important Points in Treatment
1. Stress Management - The patients should be housed in a well ventilated, clean, dust free environment in order to reduce stress to the lungs. The animals should also be isolated to prevent spreading of the disease.
2. Antibiotics - Depending on the clinical signs and severity of the disease different antibiotics may be required to hasten recovery. Consult with your veterinarian as to which antibiotics may be necessary.
3. Nutrition - The importance of fresh clean water and dust free hay cannot be overemphasized.
4. Expectorants - Some foals with heavy congestion may benefit from the use of expectorants.
5. Deworming - Some foals may be infected by roundworms whose larvae migrate through the lungs causing respiratory disease.
6. Vitamin and Mineral Supplementation - Many veterinarians recommend high doses of Vitamin C to help the body fight off infection. Adequate selenium levels is also important in maintaining the competency of the immune system.

Notify the Doctor if:
1) The foals signs worsen or new signs occur.
2) The foal has trouble breathing or refuses to eat.
3) The foal seems depressed or loses weight.
