Redmond Veterinary Clinic classifies these cases as either uncomplicated (no abnormalities found on physical exam) or complicated (abnormal physical exam) cases.
The most common causes of uncomplicated vomiting and/or diarrhea include:
- Parasites
- Stress
- Environmental change
Many cases of uncomplicated gastrointestinal disease can be treated with conservative therapy alone. You should always contact your veterinarian prior to instituting any therapy. Common treatment may include:
- Fasting the animal from food for 24-36 hours (Your veterinarian may recommend water fasting for a short time as well)
- Anti-secretory medication such as Bismu Paste (Dogs Only) every 4-6 hours
- Bland diet following the fast such as Prescription Diet i/d or a mixture of cottage cheese and boiled white rice for 3-4 days.
If your animal fails to improve within 24 hours you should contact your veterinarian.
