Acute Vomiting and Diarrhea
One of the most common maladies that affects dogs and cats is acute vomiting and diarrhea. This condition is most commonly seen in the young animal but may be seen in animals of any age.

Redmond Veterinary Clinic classifies these cases as either uncomplicated (no abnormalities found on physical exam) or complicated (abnormal physical exam) cases.

The most common causes of uncomplicated vomiting and/or diarrhea include:

  • Parasites
  • Stress
  • Environmental change

Many cases of uncomplicated gastrointestinal disease can be treated with conservative therapy alone.  You should always contact your veterinarian prior to instituting any therapy.  Common treatment may include:

  1. Fasting the animal from food for 24-36 hours (Your veterinarian may recommend water fasting for a short time as well)
  2. Anti-secretory medication such as Bismu Paste (Dogs Only) every 4-6 hours
  3. Bland diet following the fast such as Prescription Diet i/d or a mixture of cottage cheese and boiled white rice for 3-4 days.

If your animal fails to improve within 24 hours you should contact your veterinarian.
