Beef Cattle Herd Health Guidelines

Prior to Calving

Cows

  • Scourgard (4-8 weeks prior to calving)

Calving

Calves

  • Selenium (3cc Bo-Se or 1/2cc Mu-Se IM at birth)
  • Iodine navel cord as soon as possible
  • Identify with ear tag
  • Vit A-D 1cc IM (optional)
  • Make sure all calves get 1-2 quarts colostrum during first 8 hours life. One gallon first 24 hours

Pre-Breeding

Cows and Bulls

  • Identify with ear tags
  • Vaccinate
  • 2-6 weeks prior to breeding administer Respiratory/Reproductive Vaccine- (Bovi-Shield FP)
  • Semen and Trich test bulls before purchase or introducing into herd
  • Check cows for cancer eye, prolapse, bad feet, teats, etc.
  • Deworm

Heifers

  • Identify with ear tags
  • Vaccinate
  • 2-6 weeks prior to breeding administer Respiratory/Reproductive Vaccine- (Bovi-Shield FP)
  • Deworm

Branding

Calves

  • Castrate- ½ vial of Tetanus Antitoxin
  • Brand
  • Dehorn
  • Vaccinate
  • Clostridial
  • Respiratory
  • Deworm

Cows/Heifers/Bulls

  • Deworm

Weaning

Calves

  • Vaccinate
  • Clostridial
  • Respiratory
  • Brucellosis (Heifers 4-12 months of age)

Pregnancy Evaluation

Cows/Heifers

  • Pregnancy check at least 45 days along
  • Cull cancer eye, lump jaw, bad feet, teats, aged cows, late calving cows
  • Deworm
  • Vaccinate
  • Clostridial
  • Heifers boost Respiratory/Reproductive Vaccine- (Bovi-Shield FP)

Bulls

  • Deworm
  • Vaccinate
  • Clostridial
  • Cull for age and physical problems

Summer

  • Fly tags.
  • Dust bags to aid in fly control.
  • Spray with insecticide (Contact spray)

Fall

  • Deworm with product that will get grubs

GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS

RVC mineral is formulated especially for beef cattle in Central Oregon. We recommend its year-round use to provide necessary calcium, phosphorus, selenium, copper and other trace minerals required by cattle.
